I
recently received a call from Sharon, a 62 year old grandmother living just off
of Chestnut Expressway.
She was responding to the offer I had made her husband the week before on their front porch. The reason Sharon called me is because they don't have any money left for hospital bills. The family car recently broke down and they had to spend everything they had to invest in a functional vehicle. Instead of paying some incoming hospital bills, they focused on transportation so they can get to the hospital, go to the grocery store, run errands, and be able to take the family to church. Sharon and her husband Victor are no slackers. They both worked in local nursing homes for more than 20 years. "I've never missed a payment for nothing," she said. "This kind of gets us down because we simply do not have the money and are getting sued for it." Between the two of them they generate about $1,100 a month. Sounds like a 'livable' income until one factors in the fact that they are raising a grandson and a great grandson. Then of course there is the medicine, rent, utilities...
"All in all we owe less than $1,000," she said. "I had agreed
to pay $25 a month on this but when the car broke down it wiped us out."
"I've never been sued," she continued. "Not a day goes by that they don't call... 'when are you going to make a payment?'." "We get so stressed that the arthritis hurts even more," she said. Sharon, by the way, suffers from crippling arthritis that started in her spine and is traveling throughout her body. It is hard for her to get around. Her husband Victor has pulmonary disease, is diabetic, suffers from high blood pressure. He is also on oxygen. To offset medical costs they are both enrolled in the Medicare program. They do not receive assistance through Medicaid. "We qualify for Medicaid," she said. "But they want $243 a month from us to stay enrolled in the program." "That's our food money, " she continued. "Do you know how much food costs?" "That little one eats a lot." ------------------------- If you know of any person or organization who can afford to help this family past this speed bump please contact me.
